“Fair Food” Giveaway!

I am so excited!
It is a great day for a giveaway!
I read (and re-read) and loved “Fair Food” by Dr. Oran Hesterman. It is an amazing book for seeing the possibilites and opening your mind to what you can do in a sustainable food system. Oran Hesterman has been fighting to “make access to good food a reality and a right for all Americans”. He takes you through the what of our current food system, the why it needs the change, and then shares success stories of the how and gives you amazing resources to create your own how. How you can make a difference in your home, community, in your childrens’ schools, and from there think big! He provides many, many, many resources at all levels for you to get involved. So no matter if you want to just make a difference in your kitchen or make a difference globally he gives you the motivation and folks to get you there.
I highlighted a lot in this book, some passages as I flip through quickly that stand out:
“In 2010 corn was harvested on 82 million acres of land in the United States (about 27 percent of the total cultivated farmland in the country)…..when you think about corn, the image that comes to mind likely is of a late summer picnic….Actually, in terms of acreage planted and harvested, this type of corn represents only about one-half of 1 percent of total corn crop grown in the United States.”
“A single egg production company in Iowa….was forced to recall more than 380 million eggs produced by its hens at five plants in Iowa, due to risk of salmonella. These eggs were distributed from this one company under at least fifteen brand names across at least four states.”
“We need to shift from conscious consumers to engaged citizens.”
“Every time one of us choose to spend our food dollars at a farmers’ market or CSA rather than a conventional grocery store, we are sending a message.”
One of my favorite reminders “We have been spending only five years trying to undo fifty years of thinking and practice”.
So what’s the giveaway!? Dr. Oran Hesterman is going to sign a copy of “Fair Food: Growing a Healthy, Sustainable Food System for All” to one lucky follower of Lettuce Eat Together.
To ENTER the giveaway leave a comment below saying what you do or want to do to help grow a healthy, sustainable food system.

About the Author, Kate
I had to teach myself to cook and began to learn how to create the dishes I had eaten in my own kitchen. Before long, as my own kitchen confidence grew, friends were calling, texting, emailing daily to ask what they should have for dinner or how to prepare this or what to do what that. And that is how this site came to be.

Yesterday I was reading something by Joel Salatin, and a line caught my eye: “If you’re not part of the solution, then you’re part of the problem”. I believe that every one of us needs to make it a personal mission to change the way we think about food an sustainability. I will keep writing about it on my blogs, and I hope to one day facilitate the interactions between local food growers and farmers and with people interested in the local food movement! This looks like a great giveaway btw – I’ve entered through all the methods above – Pinterest, FB and Twitter!

This looks awesome! We go to the farmers market every week and try to buy local. The produce is the best, I am so excited for the warmer weather and eating lots of fruits.

I am a member of a vegetable CSA, shop at the farmer’s market when it’s in season, shop at the local natural food co-op all year long, and participate in local “crop mobs” to help farmers who could use a hand. =]

Looks like a GREAT book. We shop the farmers’ market, attempt as much local/sustainable stuff as we can, and I blog (sporadically) in an attempt to encourage others to do the same.
